Perception

If Maxime Bernier's new party is going to make inroads in the Canadian political scene, he's got to lose his social media director.

Whoever is running Bernier's twitter feed is mean. Period. Every single tweet is rude and hostile, filled with venom for Andrew Scheer, non-Bernier Conservatives, anyone who doesn't agree with him, and of course, the media.

Trudeau won the last election on *Sunny Ways* and while his actions during this term have been less than sunny, his own personal messaging remains constantly positive and upbeat. If he strays in person or seems on edge, it'll be put down the *stress of the job* - not a nasty personality. Trudeau leaves the venom spewing to Gerald Butts, his right hand man, but for the most part, he and the rest of the Liberal team stay above the fray.

Anger might amp up your base, but it will repel soft voters. We're living in a volatile world with a ton of negative news and ideas streaming across the border. The last thing people want is to invite such a steady display of invective into their daily lives even if it's just on social media. And while Bernier's raging is limited to twitter at the moment, and likely the work of a zealous intern, it is quickly becoming his persona. Real or false, it is a perception that will last.

The split within the conservative ranks is a blessing for Trudeau, at a time when our country needs a strong decisive voice from the right. Much as I think Bernier might have been the best candidate a year and a half ago, that ship has sailed and whether or not Bernier's animus is a personal grievance or genuine belief that his vision is best for the country -- it's all irrelevant because from beginning to end, his message is lost in his messaging.

I suppose it's because the artsy people are all on the Left and not available to conservatives, but at every level, conservatives just don't seem to "get" the value of public relations.
The CPC just e-mailed me an advance copy of an ad featuring Andrew Scheer. The ad was unbelievably weak and uninspiring, and I told them so. I haven't heard back from them yet. I have found that the CPC is just as bad as other Parties in response to a negative reaction to their machinations; they don't want to hear about it.

The problem in the political realm is so many of the politicians' staffers are young poli-sci graduates with little life experience and lots of classroom theory. Their higher education is accompanied by the arrogance of their youth and the conviction that,as they are more intelligent than everyone else, the decisions they come to MUST be right.

I don't have the ad,wish I could send it to you, perhaps it's available on the CPC website. If you can, view it and see if you agree or disagree with my assessment.

I'm going to look for it. Thanks. What's it about so I can use some key words?

Sadly, I think the only tactic that is going to work for the CPC in 2019 is to play up Trudeau's failings. There are many, but the problem becomes -- if you have to explain *why* someone is incompetent, you lose, because it takes too much time.

The Liberals can say *We tried with NAFTA, but Trump* *We tried with Trans Canada, but Harper (or the court)* because they won't say -- *But we sucked a lot of money away from business and the middle class to pay for your new exorbitant higher child tax benefit.* But they will say the Conservatives will take it away.

And I think the border issue will not hurt them the way Conservatives think it will. People might not like border crashers, but they like racists even less. It will definitely become about the alt-right and who's too close with them.

Sadly, Scheer is just not noticeable enough to make much of an impression at all. People want leaders or personalities -- he is neither. I don't see any way that this doesn't go down disastrously for Conservatives and for Canada... I was never a fan of Chretien or Martin, but that was mostly due to their arrogance. I never felt like they would damage the country or that their ideas were out of sync with reality.... but Trudeau's worldview is as extreme as it comes. Even his people weren't listening when he bragged about having the most progressive platform ever. The Liberals of my generation are cringing, but still afraid to loosen their grasp on power. At least the NDP is principled enough to see doom and walk away from their failed leaders - hasn't happened with Singh yet, but you can see the writing on the wall. Too many old-time Liberal MPs are willing to make the charge half a league, half a league onward .... unfortunately, we're all going to be canon fodder.
