Canada - Great place to be a pedophile

Below is a list of news stories from the past 10 days or so.

The first case is of a father, who began raping his daughter when she was just 24 months old. He took pictures and uploaded them to the internet. He was sentenced to 15 years, but the Quebec appeal court has since reduced it to 9, because this was not the worst case of sex abuse ever and while there was penetration of a baby -- apparently there was 'no violence'. The judge sounds as warped as the rapist.
Pedophile's sentence too harsh, court rules

The next is the case of a 22 year old who went to Bosnia as a civilian contractor. While there, he witnessed 'very significant atrocities' including dead bodies -- so of course when he came back to Canada he needed a way to take his mind off things -- downloading pictures of children being raped eased the trauma of being a witness to other people's suffering. This guy has to perform 100 hours of community service. Maybe he can ease the suffering of victims who've faced the trauma of being witness to other people's tragedies by teaching them how to download kiddie porn.
You'd have to wonder if witnessing the suffering of others excuses one from any responsibility in downloading child porn -- how much could you get away with if you actually suffer yourself?
Trauma pleaded in child porn case -- No jail for man who witnessed atrocities

We tell ourselves we're a civilized society. We are shocked by the Dutch political group that would legalize child pornography, and eventually child-adult sex. We ask ourselves 'how could they?' and yet our judges are treating child rape as a non-violent crime and finding excuses to give child porn collectors house arrest and community service.

Child porn as therapy???? Child rape non-violent???

These are our judges saying these things -- the people who 'interpret' our laws and mete out punishment to violators --they are saying that those who rape babies and watch other people rape babies are not criminals.

What is to deter a pedophile from raping a child --a nine year sentence? By the time he gets caught, (not usually after the first) he might just think it's worth it -- because after a third off for good behaviour it's really only six years.

And why would anyone worry about downloading child porn? House arrest? Big deal. Community service? It's the community that's being punished there.

I've no doubt that in some not-so-distant-future that being a pedophile will be just another sexual orientation and it will be argued that if it's legalized, then at least the creeps wouldn't have to kill the kids.

It's a sick world and the lawyers and judges here should be as ashamed as the sickos in these articles.

Having child porn earns 14 months

House arrest for convicted former school teacher

Child porn collector gets 15 months

No jail time for convicted sex offender

Pedophile gets house arrest for child porn

Our children deserve better.

Good for you for pointing all this out. I know I had heard several stories like this lately but I hadn't realized there were ten of them. It's sad to think that these kind of stories are so comon, they almost don't stand out anymore.

We desperately need to overhaul laws used to prosecute these beasts.

I'm with Matt - I'd noticed a number of stories, but didn't realize just how many, and how crappy the 'punishment' (for lack of a better word).

This sort of crap has to stop.

Thanks for this wake-up call. Why haven't we seen more outrage in MSM?

As of today, I am no longer going to call it our justice system. From now on, I am officially calling it our Unjustice system. I urge you and everyone else to do the same.

It may have taken a few years to get used to "Employment Insurance" as opposed to Unemployment Insurance. Perhaps with our words, we can bring it to light by making those who are unfazed by child molestation story after child molestation story to stop and pause a moment.

And to think, 35 or so years ago, aggravated sexual assault was punishable by death. How far we have slipped into the abyss.

Lack of punishment, have you noticed that someone in a religious cloak can rape and abuse children for froty or fifty years and just as they retire or sometime after retirement they suddenly get turned in. Their almost never thirty or forty or fifty years old, always seventy or eighty years old. What's up with that ?

blanks57, you're firing blanks... or just interested in throwing cheap shots.
The predators who wore clerical collars were just as much scum as those whom Canadianna has mentioned in her post. And you know perfectly well that there was an indefensible stonewalling by certain church bureaucrats. So raise the level of your discourse here. Or are you defending the predators?????????

Lepidopterist --
Statutory rape ???

We're not talking 13 year old with a seventeen year old. We're talking both incest and the sexual violation of an infant and other pre-pubescent children.

Don't twist things so as to form a false version of what really happens.

I've twisted nothing.
And as for 'a false version of what really happens . . .'
I'm really not sure what you mean by that.
If you mean that you as an individual enjoy fantasizing about sex with an infant or child so I should believe that's harmless -- I don't. As a parent, I fear there will come a day when your fantasies no longer satiate your desires.

If you mean that sex with children is a-okay or that the only reason it's wrong is because we make kids think it is or because we don't give kids the credit of a brain to consent -- not only do I believe you're wrong about 12 and 13 year olds being capable of informed consent, but I certainly wouldn't impute such a capability to a two year old.

Viewing child porn is no less twisted than actually committing the sexual violation against children. The 'I was just watching' attitude renders the children in those pictures and videos as merely incidental to your pleasure.

SANGRE Y LIBERTAD!

Blood and freedom? Now you're starting to worry me.

Your profile describes you as a celibate pedophile. Keep it that way and while you're at it, please don't promote your predilection on my blog under the pretense of finding something inconsistent in my argument against child porn and child/adult sex.

I was trying to point out that those who wear a religious collar always seem to me to be old and retired before they get caught for crimes they commited twenty, thirty or forty years ago.

This is where the liberal rubber hits the road.

The reason I (and most other conservatives) dislike hate crime laws is that they rely upon what a person committing a crime is thinking with reference to the crime. But an important aspect of liberalism is that you assess/judge/punish people on the basis of their actions, not their thoughts. To think otherwise is to take the first step on the short path to totalitarianism.

The Sharpe case dealt with these exact issues. Because child molestation is an extreme issue, it tests our democratic and liberal commitments to an extreme degree. It's probably easier for me because I don't have children, but I can't agree with you here.

Peter, if you read my post and my comment to the pedophile, I think you'll see that although I've said I don't think his thoughts are harmless --I also don't think the are punishable.

When I extrapolate and expect that fantasies might not be enough for him in the future, I am stating a real concern -- all action begins with thought. No where do I suggest that he should be punished for his thoughts or fantasies if he never acts on them.
